Roofing Systems: Design Considerations For Resiliency, Longevity & Durability

Panel discussion of the considerations to be addressed for roofing systems to achieve resiliency, longevity and durability for construction projects.

Learning Objectives

  1. Gain awareness of the types of roofing systems and product choices that are available on the market.
  2. Gain awareness of the various challenges to achieve a roofing system that is both resilient and durable with a long service life.
  3. Be exposed to the components of a roofing system that improve resiliency and durability.
  4. Steps that a designer/specifier can take to improve the durability and longevity of a roofing system.
  5. Gain awareness of the product testing that supports the manufacturing and improvement of roofing products and systems.
  6. Gain awareness of the available technical services that support the installation of roofing products and systems.

Bill has extensive experience in roofing and waterproofing products and systems. He is a Registered Roofing Consultant (RRC). His project experience has included Fenway Park, the Rhode Island State Capitol and the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Kahlil House in Manchester, NH. Bill is retired but still consults occasionally!

He is a Fellow of the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC) where he serves on the Ethics Committee and locally as the New England Chapter IIBEC Treasurer. He is also a past president of the Boston CSI Chapter.

John McGill
Director – Technical Services
Sika Corporation

John lives in the suburbs of Chicago with his wife of 17 years, two daughters, and two foster children. He enjoys powersports, boating, and playing golf, as well as the Chicago Bears, Cubs, and Blackhawks.

His career in the construction industry began with summer jobs at his father’s small general contracting business. After college, he spent several years in the curtainwall/glazing industry before transitioning to the roofing sector. He worked for a union contractor in Chicago, where he estimated, sold, and managed projects, and ran the service department, gaining invaluable experience in identifying and addressing roof failures of all roof systems.

Following his time with the contractor, he founded his own roofing company, which he ran for a few years before joining the Sika team. Over the past eight years at Sika, he has served as the Regional Technical Manager for the Midwest and was promoted to Technical Director in 2022. In his current role, he is responsible for writing technical policies and bulletins, exploring new products to enhance Sika’s solutions, and managing the overall technical department.

Michael Popeck is the Northeast Design Manager of Building & Roofing Science for GAF. With over 20 years of experience specializing in low-slope roofing & general building enclosure consulting, Michael uses this experience to interact with other design professionals in order to educate and help promote best roofing & design practices throughout the industry.

Active within IIBEC, Michael is a Registered Roof Consultant, Registered Exterior Wall Consultant, serves as the VP of the IIBEC Delaware Valley Chapter, and is on the IIBEC Certification Council.
