The Restoration Of The Mayflower II

In 2020, on the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims landing the original Mayflower in Plymouth after crossing the Atlantic in 1620, the restored Mayflower II sailed into the harbor again after undergoing a multi-year restoration in the Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard at Mystic Seaport. The Mayflower II is owned by Plimoth Plantation. The restoration of the 60-year-old wooden ship was carried out over several years with the project scheduled for completion for the 400th anniversary

Captain Mayflower II

In his role as Plimoth Patuxet Museums Director of Maritime Preservation and Operations, Whit is responsible for all aspects of the Museum’s maritime program, including the multi-year, multi-million-dollar Mayflower II Restoration Project. 

Whit came to Plimoth Plantation with more than thirty years of experience working with wooden boats. His most recent post was at the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation where he maintained and operated three square-rigged vessels for 10 years. Whit has a long history with ships and sailing, having journeyed all over the North Atlantic, Caribbean, and the Mediterranean. He has sailed a wide variety of vessels, from small catboats to square riggers, schooners, and sloops.
