Design Considerations for Fenestration Systems

Andrew E. Jeffrey
Senior Consulting Engineer, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger

It is critical to identify and select a fenestration product that is compatible with project requirements, performance expectations and a design esthetic early in the design process. Clear understanding of the design requirements for the project is an essential first step in selecting an appropriate product type and avoiding selection of a product that is not capable of providing satisfactory performance even under the most well intentioned design.

This presentation will focus on design considerations related to selection of fenestration systems in commercial buildings. The presenter will discuss practical tips for design of fenestration systems to meet the performance requirements including structural wind loads, air and water infiltration, OITC ratings ( sound transmission ), thermal comfort, condensation resistance in humidified buildings, and energy and fire code requirements.

The format includes an introduction of various fenestration product available on the market, case studies of problems encountered and examples of solutions to improve fenestration design and construction.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how to assess the requirements for fenestration systems based on the code requirements for the building.
  • Learn how to assess the requirements for fenestration systems based on the function of the building.
  • Learn how to assess the requirements for fenestration systems based on the occupant requirements of the building.
  • Learn how to use these requirements to select design and install fenestration systems so as to meet the requirements for the building.
