Sustainable Waterfront Development, Revitalization, and Resiliency
The waterfront is the first line of defense in addressing climate change and is vulnerable to multiple challenges. Many of our nation’s waterfront properties have a history of being neglected, abandoned, contaminated, and inaccessible. Developing our waterfront properties can improve the quality of life for surrounding communities, initiate the revitalization of entire neighborhoods, and provide necessary components to allow resiliency. Topics covered in this course are intended to assist architects, developers, engineers and consultants in identifying suitable waterfront design approaches to encourage sustainable development, clean up contaminated waterways and waterfront properties, enhance ecology and wildlife habitats at the shoreline, improve resiliency during natural disasters, and provide safe public access to our waterways for future generations to enjoy.
- Participants will learn about the development planning and regulatory permitting process for waterfront properties and the role of the waterfront engineer within the design team.
- Participants will be able to identify various waterfront structures, approaches to shoreline protection, and methods of waterfront enhancement, and will be able to select suitable approaches for waterfront development projects to protect public health and the environment.
- Participants will be able to select waterfront design approaches that help clean up our waterways and waterfront properties, enhance wildlife habitats, provide safe public access to the shoreline, and improve resiliency during natural disasters.
- Participants will learn about the Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines, or WEDG (the waterfront equivalent of LEED certification for buildings) and be able to calculate credits applicable to WEDG certification for a sample sustainable waterfront development project.

Kenneth A. Huber, PE
Ken Huber is an Associate with Langan Engineering and Environmental Services. Mr. Huber obtained a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1993 and a Master of Science in Geotechnical Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1997. He has over 25 years of experience in geotechnical and waterfront engineering and holds professional engineering licenses in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Mr. Huber has worked on many award-winning projects, including the New York Daily News Libertyview Printing Plant, Colgate-Palmolive Waterfront Improvements, Prudential Center Arena, NY Methodist Hospital’s Center for Community Health, and Bronx Point. He has co-authored several papers and training manuals. Mr. Huber served as a technical advisor to the Waterfront Alliance for the Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines (WEDG), a credit system and design tool for resilient and sustainable waterfront development, and he is an instructor for the WEDG professional certification course. He also serves on a technical committee preparing portions of the New York City Waterfront Code. Mr. Huber currently serves as technical lead for Langan’s waterfront engineering practice out of New York City.
