Massachusetts State Building Code requires a minimum STC of 45 in common walls between
dwelling uints, hallways, service rooms and common areas. Other codes and jurisdictions have
upped that standard to 50 or more. But that’s just a laboratoryt test number. How do we meet it?
More importantly, what does it really mean? What does it actually sound like on the other side of
the wall? Can we do better?

At this month’s chapter meeting, we’ll review noise and sound transmission class (STC) ratings,
ways to identify products for sound isolation, assemblies to achieve different ratings, basic
design guidelines for what should appear on construction documents, and resources to help
sound isolation design efforts. Then we’ll actually demonstrate the differences, using a PA
speaker, a specially constructed sound isolation box and sample panels of different wall
assemblies.
